Leonard Bernstein is one of America’s most beloved composers and conductors. On this concert, we connect with a sample of his compositions, showing the wide range of sound that Bernstein creates.
The featured piece is Chichester Psalms, a three-movement setting of Hebrew Psalms for organ, harp and percussion. These settings range from powerful, to ecstatically joyful, to serenely beautiful. The second movement is from Psalm 23 (“The Lord is my shepherd…), and we are proud to introduce Luke Tyndall singing the boy soprano solo!
We will also sing two selections from Bernstein’s Mass, which was commissioned by Jaqueline Kennedy for the opening of the Kennedy Center for the Arts in Washington, D.C.
No sample of Bernstein’s music would be complete without selections from his Broadway musicals. We will present two selections from Candide and four selections from West Side Story.
Connect with this wonderful music!

ONE VOICE: For Peace
VIH is excited to bring to our audience A Sermon from the Mountain, a work by one of America’s foremost choral composers and arrangers, Alice Parker. The work celebrates the words and values of Martin Luther King Jr. Composed shortly after his assassination, Parker uses the musical styles of spirituals, gospel music, blues and American folk music to personalize the message “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

ONE VOICE: Sing-Along Messiah
Community and choir join their voices in harmony with Handel’s great masterwork accompanied by a 23-piece orchestra, excellent soloists and projections of beautiful calligraphy by Timothy Botts. The McHenry County College Chorus will supplement the on-stage choir. This is one of our area’s most meaningful holiday traditions, and a strong vision of hope proclaimed in one voice.

ONE VOICE: Around The World
This concert season marks a new chapter for VIH, as we become part of Encore! Music Academy. The two unique concerts on this day showcase the four Encore Youth Choirs and VIH, showing that choral singing is a life-long, life-enriching activity. VIH combines with two EYC choirs to present the choral masterwork, Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria, accompanied by full orchestra. There will be several pieces combining all five choirs, and each choir will be featured in their own selections of music from around the world
